The city of Volos was established near the site of Ancient Iolkos, home of the mythological Greek hero Jason, who sailed on the ship Argo with the Argonauts to Colchis in search of the Golden Fleece.
Volos is located in the region of Thessaly in Central Greece. It is the capital of the Prefecture of Magnesia, and sits at the foot of the Pelion Mountains. The modern city of Volos is one of the largest commercial ports in the country, and has a major industrial presence.
The port of Volos is connected by ferry to the Northern Sporades islands of Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos. For many years, its commercial marina has hosted several sailing boat rental companies.
Some of the main attractions of the city are the Athanasakio Archaeological Museum (1909), the University of Thessaly’s Papastratos Building (1935), churches Agios Nikolaos (1934) and Agios Konstantinos (1936), the Tsalapata Rooftile and Brickworks Museum (1926), the Museum of the City of Volos, the Museum of Natural History, and the archaeological sites of Dimini and Sesklo.
