After arriving there you will visit the Archaeological Museum of Dion (which contains the hydraulis, one of the oldest known musical instruments). This is followed by exploration of the Archaeological Site, which includes the Palace of Dionysus and the Shields dedicated by Alexander the Great for his victory over the Persians in the Battle of Granicus. The ancient city had a system of intersecting streets, which were paved during the imperial years. In the southern part of the city were the public baths, called the Great Baths, which date from 200 AD. Next to them is the Conservatory, and in the eastern sector lies the impressive Mansion of Dionysus, with its mosaics. In the center of the city is the episcopal basilica of the 4th century AD, and outside the walls lies the cemetery basilica from the 5th century. In Dion several ancient sanctuaries have been preserved, as has the Hellenistic theater which was built by Philip V, and part of the athletic stadium where the nude Olympian games were held.

Following the tour of Dion, the next stop is Vergina. The most important archaeological find of Vergina is the Royal Tomb of King Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. Vergina also is the site of the Archaeological Museum of Aigai, the first capital of ancient Macedonia.

Pieria and Votiaia formed the core of the Macedonian kingdom. In 479 BC the Macedonian king Alexander I defeated the Persians and the state was liberated. At that time, the capital of Macedonia was Aigai, which is identified with today’s Vergina. Excavations began in 1861 under the supervision of the French archaeologist Léon Heuzey. The archaeological site of Aigai is protected by UNESCO as a Monument of Outstanding Cultural Heritage and as an area of special natural beauty.

It was founded around 400 BC, by Archelaus I (413-399 BC) or by Amyntas III, to become the new capital of the Macedonian kingdom, replacing Aige. It fell into decline towards the end of the 1st century BC.

During the tour we will take you around, and wait for you at the archaeological sites and museums you have chosen to visit.
